Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. While a small girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
